Description

When one first hears the name “Goodman” they immediately think of The Happy Goodmans. From that famous group came one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time… Rusty Goodman.

Starting out in the late 50’s singing baritone for the Plainsmen Quartet, Rusty quickly captured the attention of many fans by being one of the most versatile singers of the day. At times his singing range would go from baritone to bass and then well into the first tenor range. It wasn¹t long though, before Rusty left the Plainsmen in 1963 to join his family group, the Happy Goodmans and history was made.

During his years with the Goodmans, Rusty became not only known for his energized as well as emotional singing, but for his songwriting. Some of the best gospel songs of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were penned by Rusty Goodman. Songs like “I Wouldn¹t Take Nothing For My Journey Now,” “Wait’ll You See My Brand New Home,” “John The Revelator” and “Had It Not Been” to mention a few. Rusty seemed to pour his heart into each song that he wrote, a heart that was full of the love of God. There wasn¹t a Southern Gospel artist of that era who wasn¹t singing at least one of his songs. Of course the Goodmans thrived during this time with hit after hit from Rusty’s pen.

In the early 70’s Rusty decided to step out on his own, while still singing occasionally with the Goodmans over the next few years. It was a move that would end up producing many of the best gospel songs ever. He was truly a diamond in the midst of other Southern Gospel jewels. With his solo projects he was able to be more flexible with song styles while continuing to showcase his rich, deep voice with unmistakable power and conviction.

Now for the first time on CD, New Haven Records brings the best songs of Rusty Goodmans career to his long awaiting friends and fans. We honor the life and music of Rusty Goodman in the Gospel Legacy series with Rusty Goodman, The Essential Collection. It contains the songs which prove that Rusty was the consummate songwriter and singer. His songs continue to be interpreted and sung by the top artists of the day and because of this, Rusty Goodman will live on forever.
