Description

J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet were one of the most historical and influential music pioneers of our time. They were the first to record Southern Gospel music on a major label RCA Records in 1927. They were also the first to have a mainstream hit single with “Give The World A Smile.” J.D. Sumner would also go on to form the National Quartet Convention and the Gospel Music Association in the early 60’s.

In the 70’s the group flourished, and were invited to tour and record with Elvis Presley. It would be a long lasting relationship that continued until Elvis’ death in 1977. They continued to make concert and TV appearances through the late 90’s and were featured frequently on the Gaither Homecoming series giving them a new generation of fans.

Through all of the group history one thing was always consistent…the group’s passion and love for great Gospel music. They recorded and released some of the best songs and influenced countless singers of their time. New Haven Records has brought together the greatest songs of J.D. Sumner and The Stamps career on this Gospel Legacy Series project. Featured is the #1 hit and GMA Song Of The Year “The Night Before Easter” as well as all of there best songs on one disc. This collection will also feature “Blessed Assurance,” the song that put J.D. in the Guinness Book of World Records for the lowest note ever captured in a recording. Coinciding with the new J.D. Sumner & the Stamps “Treasury Of Memories” release, will be a one hour television special on the Inspiration Television Network, titled “J.D. Sumner, Video Of A Gospel Music Legend.”

The Gospel music world was saddened in 1998 when it lost long time member J.D. Sumner who was on tour at the time of his death. His powerful voice and humorous style is truly missed. Even so this spectacular collection will continue to keep the legend and the music alive.
